Greeting from Indianapolis.

by Keith Beckett

Very excited to be here representing and marketing for EMP at the NCAA national convention.

Official registration opened up yesterday. It’s hard to imagine it has been essentially two years since the last in-person convention. Seeing representatives from all divisions convene to address many topics and legislative matters is very exciting. While the number of in person attendees may be less than normal, the level of enthusiasm and motivation is higher than ever.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was primarily devoted to registration and the Honors Celebration

Awards presented at the Honors Celebration included, the Top 10 Award winners recognizing former student-athletes for their successes on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in recognition of collegiate and professional achievements. The Theodore Roosevelt Award, (The Teddy), the highest NCAA honor awarded annually to a distinguished citizen of national reputation and outstanding accomplishment, and the 2022 Inspiration Awards. A full list of the recipients for each can be found at https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2013/12/9/ncaa-honors-celebration.aspx

I also had the privilege to meet with several athletic administrators to both visit and talk about the exciting activities and opportunities with EMP. It was especially interesting to hear individuals’ perspectives on many of the current topics of discussion and consideration. In addition to the constitution legislation (https://www.ncaa.org/news/2021/7/30/general-ncaa-board-of-governors-to-convene-constitutional-convention.aspx ) that will be voted on and confirmed later today (Thursday), I had a variety of conversations with people about NIL. EMP along with assorted strategic partners have a variety of tools and resources to empower and assist you with this new area. A variety of information on that specific topic will be forthcoming.

Early today NCAA President Mark Emmert officially opened the convention with his talk on the State of College Sports. A summary of President Emmet’s talk, constitution voting, and the annual legislative session will be reported by an EMP associate on Saturday.

In addition to the NCAA convention, I’m also here meeting with representatives from the Indiana Sports Corp, the NCAA office, representatives from IUPUI, and members of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships Committee for a site visit and preparations for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held at IUPUI in March. There was a great deal of excitement about the return to the NCAA DIII Swimming and Diving Championships after a two-year hiatus.
